Couple of weeks back when I was home alone, my primary task given by Hubby dear, was to make as many dishes as I could and click and blog to my heart’s content. I said it would be impossible, for one I wont’ have my critics and another, who will I feed all that food I cook. He suggested I call over my friends, or do whatever I think was the best to share the food. But the goal was to cook and click. Maybe even for the next year or so. As if that would ever happen.
In the end what happened was, I ended up missing them so much, and on top my parents wouldn’t let me alone. I then found up that I couldn’t really sit alone and blog non stop. Where will I go for inspiration for the stories and what will I actually write? I ended up cleaning the house to sparkling speck clean and then went through my set of food pictures couple of times. This had me occupied for a day. What should I do for the rest of the weekend was my worry! Finally I decided I ought to take hubby dear’s word and cooked up a meal.
Through the night I was thinking what I should make, finally settling to a simple south Indian meal. I remembered the Danttu Kootu that Amma made some weeks back, and told her that I want to cook that. Our further discussion lead to couple of ideas and we ended up making more than what we thought we should do!
We may have spent about an hour or so cooking the entire thali. However I spent more time clicking the pictures. Somehow the Thalis still defy me in their presentation. And lighting was not really helping. Though on overall, I was so happy having done this thali. The recipes are from my paper clippings saved up for over a decade. It really does give a warm feeling cooking up those recipes after all these years. After clicking as much as I could, I rushed to work. And I called up to know how Daddy enjoyed the meal. Even though we made sure we cooked very little, we had have it again for dinner.
I was happy that all the dishes turned out great. We made Vangi Bath with Ready to use Vangi Bath Masala Powder, Vendakkai Mor Kuzhambu, Beetroot Rasam, Mulaikeerai Thandu Kootu, Aloo stuffed Bell pepper bajji, Appam, Papadam, Curd rice, Atukula Payasam.
The meal was too elaborate, I actually felt one can’t enjoy individual dishes this way. Anyway I am sure to be making all this again.
Today’s recipe is going to be the Mulaikeerai Thandu Kootu or Danttu Curry or Danttuaku Kora.
Mulaikeerai Danttu/ Danttu Aaku Kootu
Moong Dal – 100 gms
Molakeera Danttu/ Danttu Aaku – 1 cup
Onions – 1/4 cup
Tomatoes – 1 medium
Garlic – 3 cloves.
Pressure cook all the above for 1 whistle.
Once the pressure falls off, add 1 tbsp fresh grated coconut, salt and turmeric. Continue cooking in simmer
In another pan, heat 2 tsp oil, add mustard, urad dal, channa dal, curry leaves, 3 dry red chillies, saute and pour over the simmering dal.
Cook for couple of minutes and switch off.
